Return (s) to the Canaries

by Gran Canaria

from March 21 to 28, 2019

The site " jeanavu.org " relates our discovery  of this beautiful central island of the Canary Islands archipelago, Gran Canaria precisely 5 years ago, but also that of Lanzarote (for a 2nd time) in November 2015.

We wanted to rediscover this feeling of warm serenity, and the picturesque Canary Islands, but also to try to discover what too short time had not allowed us to see. Throughout this half-decade, it was the occasion  to see how, in what sense Gran Canaria, "  mainland island  As it is sometimes called, evolved, to perceive  villages,  still unknown landscapes, new sites.

However, it was enough for the vagaries of the weather to almost permanently reinforce a heavy cloud cover over the north of the island, overflowing  cheerfully towards the south, so that the first memories are disenchanted, that seduction plays less.

For this island, as for the whole archipelago, the freshness of the unprecedented during the  modest first explorations is sometimes tarnished on the second visit here, but on the contrary is reinforced elsewhere.

There are perhaps memories that are more anchored in the identity of each  island, more sober and deep, less willingly seductive.

But the overall impression remains attractive enough to give still other desires, such as those to walk the beautiful paths of the archipelago as hikers, provided that our energy provides for it.  Again.

And to complete briefly with  memories of other visits to Tenerife (June 2008 and October 2017),  from La Palma (January 2017) and Lanzarote (March 2010 and November 2015).

But let's first review Gran Canaria.

The introduction of 5 years ago  remains relevant, if we except this time the  climate which is not "... of an almost constant leniency" and   "the blue hell of the western coasts" (the wind was then violent), also steep but very peaceful this time:  " On the edge of the Ancient World , the" Fortunate Islands ", since this is how the Canaries were named in ancient Greece, were shamelessly subjected from the beginning of the 15th century by the conquerors from the north (French, Spanish , Portuguese ...) ...
